Thommie Bergman turns 67 today. He was the first of the Swedes to play in North America in the 1970s. A rugged blueliner, he spent two years with the Detroit Red Wings before joining the WHA Winnipeg Jets in 1974-75.
After the 1977-78 campaign, he jumped back to Detroit where he finished his career. This is the Anniversary of One of the Most Important Days in Hockey History. In 1972 Bobby Hull announces he'll leave the Chicago Blackhawks to sign a $1,000,000 contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the fledgling WHA.
The WHA went from fantasy to reality -- and the game would never be the same. Ulf Nilsson on the Winnipeg Jets "Hotline" and linemates Anders Hedberg and Bobby Hull:
